Awareness Through Movement for Musicians

Because students and teachers often think there is only one way to position the left hand or use the bow arm, they overlook an idea that could be more valuable and helpful to them. Just as we have a range of motion in standing upright in one place (leaning forward and backward, or to the left and right) before we lose our balance, we have ranges of motion in the left and right hands (and in the body as it relates to playing) before we get into the areas that promote tension and distort positions.

The Use of the Eyes

For many of our actions, the eye is the initiator of the action. In catching or hitting a ball, in walking through a room full of furniture, driving a car or flying a plane, skiing or doing one of the many martial arts, the body moves in response to visual cues. In fact, this function is so important that I believe that organizing the body for motion is the major function of the visual system.
